Gratitude

Recent posts from us here at Atlantean Heart have focused on who to ask and how to ask for help from the Saints. This morning we were approached by one of our La Madama Spirits and asked to write and highlight the importance of showing gratitude.

Giving and receiving is part of a cycle, when we receive something we must give something back. In the basic rituals we've shared with you this process is shown that we give the saints and spirits water or candles, or a space in our homes but there is more to it than just this. It is important to show gratitude to the Saint and Spirits because by doing this we complete the cycle and allow it to begin again. Often this can be seen in quite public forums, for example in many countries people will put advertisments in news papers or on the internet thanking a particular saint. In Europe and South America often along the roads one can find small purpose built mini-shrines thanking a particular saint, often the Virgin Mary. Some believe that this public testament increases the Saint's power as an intercessor.

Whenever we give thanks we open the ways for more things to come in. When you ask the Saints and Spirits to help you with something you can often as part of the "bargain" offer to tell others of what the saint have done for you. This working relationship becomes ever fruitful so long as it is based in respect and love, part of that respect is showing gratitude.

I am reminded of a story of a lady I know, she asked the saints and her spirits for help and they often gave her what she wished for. One day this stopped, she had been asking for money and money had been coming in, in the form of unclaimed 'lotto scratch-cards' she had about 6 or 7 wins and hadn't claimed them. She was unable to see why 'her luck ran out' and didn't see that by not claiming what she'd won, she wasn't being grateful for what the Saints had provided. At the same time, she wasn't showing she valued what the Saints were providing and so they stopped providing help. The moment she realised what was going on, claimed her winnings and thanked the saints the next day she got a check in the mail from an Aunt who felt she just wanted to spoil her niece.

Money Magic - St. Matthew

St. Matthew
In the current economic climate more and more people are struggling to make ends meet. This has prompted us here at Atlantean Heart to look for a possible spiritual remedy or action which we can use to try and help balance the books.

We looked at New World traditions like the Ekkeko Spirits and petitioning saints, Angels and Sages for money but this for us didn't seem to quite fit.
Asking the Saints for help is normal, asking them for money is probably one of the most common requests they get and they always do their best to respond. But for some reason just asking for money doesn't seem to fully tackle the situation, once you have money you need to be able to keep hold of it. This is where the good Saint Matthew comes in.

St. Matthew is both Patron Saint of Money and Patron Saint of managing money. In life, we are told, he was a tax collector and his name roughly translated means 'Gift from God'. He can help us to get what we're owed, to pay our debts (both temporal and spiritual) and to keep more of our income - making us more financially sound. He's the guy to get our 'books balanced'.

You might like  to try the following Novena - for nine days burn a combination of green, gold and blue candles in honour of the Saint, set out a glass of water and perhaps even the image at the top of this page whilst praying:

                      Prayer to St. Matthew

Dear publican become a Saint, after once gathering taxes and tolls how wonderful was your conversion by grace when you followed the Poor Man of Nazareth. Grant that I may be provided for in all my necessities, especially:

                                    *Make Petition Here*

O Glorious St. Matthew, intercede in Heaven for me a Sinner that I may enjoy the glories of Heaven whilst here on Earth and I will praise your name with the elect and tell others of your glory. Amen

1 Our Father and Three Hail Marys.

(these are traditional, but optional).

St. Expedite

Working with St. Expedite

St. Expedite has been quite prominent in the work we do here at Atlantean Heart recently, so it was felt appropriate to share with everyone a little bit about this most powerful of saints.

There are many stories on line about St. Expedite ranging from him being a Roman Soldier who was martyred to him being a 'mask' for other spirit beings which "accidentally" came into existence when some Nuns got the wrong idea about the contents of a crate marked 'expedito'. Personally I'm not sure about that story, but it makes a good yarn and it adds to the mystery of this most enigmatic of saints.

For the purposes of this article, lets suspend any disbelief and accept that we have a powerful wonder-working saint, who happens to be a Roman Martyr who is willing to help us providing we ask. So on a blog about healing you might ask why is he being discussed. Well, the answer to that is quite simple. Recently St. Expedite has been helping us in our healing work and sorting out some other problems. It is customary to spread knowledge of wonder-working saints when they help with miracles, so that's what we're doing.

St. Expedite is the Patron Saint of people who need things in a hurry, people who are desperate and need things so fast that it could even be life or death. He is also Patron Saint of Computer Programmers and Procrastinators. St. Expedite doesn't mess about, so you need to be extra careful to only ask for what you need.  It takes time to build a relationship with him, just as it does anyone else. The way which we can start to do this is to burn candles and incense in his honour. St. Expedite likes warm spicy incense, and in our experience he favours frankincense. If you are 'into' colour symbolism or therapy, his colours are Gold / Yellow and Red in general, although I did know a lady who'd burn green candles with her red ones when she was asking for money.

Now, having mentioned money I guess I'd better jump straight to it. People often ask St.Expedite to provide for their needs, this can include money, be for healing, to make things work generally for them in their lives. St. Expedite is the patron of things in a hurry, so when you ask him for help make sure it's for things you want right now. I've heard it said that for example pre-emptively asking for his help for something - say next week - will be offensive as he likes to get things done now. Though bear in mind he's not a cosmic ATM - he won't just throw money your way frivolously.

Some people will tell you it's best to petition St. Expedite on a certain day of the week. In my experience this is too much of a 'magical / magickal" tradition - Expedite is a folk saint and so strictly adhering to the rules of ceremonial magic might not be the best way to get his attention. Saints aren't bound by space and time in the same way humans are, and while yes Tuesdays are associated with Mars and St. Expedite as a soldier is a fiery spirit it doesn't mean that he's only listening on Tuesdays.

Typically people will light candles for him and ask his help this is the procedure I use to ask St. Expedites help:

  • Lay out a white napkin and on it place a picture of St. Expedite.

  • Then to the left of the picture I place a candle and to the right I place a glass of water. The shape formed is a triangle.
  • I write out my petition for help and if it's to attract something to me, I fold the paper towards me. If it's to remove an illness / influence / break bad luck - I fold the paper away from me.

  •  Then I light the candle and pray an appropriate prayer to my Higher Power / God / Goddess.

  • When this has been done I will talk to St. Expedite and ask him for help, saying why I need it now. I promise him that when he has granted my request that I will reward him with a slice of cake and some flowers (red carnations are traditional).

  • Allow the candle to either burn down or burn out, making sure that it is not left unattended at any point, and it's burnt in a safe appropriate location and candle holder.
When my petition has been granted as soon as I can, I will get St. Expedite the flowers and put out a slice of cake for him with a tea-light on it. When the candle has burnt out, I throw the cake to the wild birds in my garden. Traditions can vary, but they all state that he must be paid promptly and the agreed amount and not a penny more, as he's a hard but fair worker and expects what he is due.

A word of caution though, should you fail to pay him tradition states that St. Expedite will take away what he has given and some report that he in effect charges a penalty for breaking the deal. It is customary not to 'over-load' him with more than one petition at a time.

There are many more traditions associated with St. Expedite, more than could be put here in this blog.  He is certainly an excellent saint to befriend.

May All Your Works Be Crowned With Success, Glory to You St. Expedite !
