It's that time of year again, where the focus of our spiritual work moves towards our departed loved ones. Traditionally in the West the month of November was dedicated to prayers for the dead and communicating with our departed loved ones and Ancestors.
Believe it or not, this practice is still relevant today. We are the genetic continuance of our ancestors, we share with them at a cellular level a bond which goes back to the dawn of time.
A wise person once said that in order to love oneself, one must know one self. By embracing our past, and honouring where we came from we are better able to begin to connect to who we truly are.
If you believe we chose where we incarnate, then under the law of resonance, we must pick a place relevant to ourselves and our growth needs. Often by honouring the Ancestors, we are in fact honouring ourselves, our life purpose and spiritual destination. We are also able to link into the Wisdom of Ages, by listening to the wise guidance offered by our departed loved ones. Their wisdom is not something which should not be easily dismissed, although bear in mind that whilst they are still very fallible like us "in body" , they are often able to share from the wealth of their experience. Similarly, their guidance should be treated with the same scrutiny as any other guidance given by any other person or group of people.
It is also worth noting, that though our ancestors and departed loved ones are not "in body" they can still pray for us. Most of Western Culture has dismissed or abandoned this as superstitious revelation, but in the East the value of this knowledge is fully appreciated. Our loved ones can send help and intercede for us when we have the right relationship with them.
We can in return help them and give them not only our love, but by simple rituals like the lighting of candles in prayer, we can provide the ectoplasm they need to make manifest things in our lives. In effect, we give them additional nourishment and power to intercede for us.
The month of November gives us the opportunity to start to build this relationship. To begin working in this way, it might be an idea to meditate on your departed loved ones. Pick a loved one whom you feel a strong positive connection to, send them love from your heart and invite them into your home / life and perhaps light a candle before their picture. By doing this you are starting to open the door of communication between you and your dear loved one.
Let your intuition guide you, and remember that our loved ones never ask anything outrageous from us, nor anything which is demanding. Should you perceive this, then perhaps it is not them, if so you can banish this trickster spirit by invoking the Archangel Michael using the widely available prayer of Pope Leo XIII.
