"And I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." - Mathew 16:19
Folk traditions like hoodoo take this passage and assign to St. Peter the ability to remove all obstacles. As a result he stands at the metaphorical crossroads and can open all doors, he has the spiritual authority and ability to prepare the ways. It is for this reasons that spiritual practices and New World Religions like Voodoo associate him with their Spirits - particularly he can be associated with Papa Legba. Although, there is variation of the "mask" which Papa Legba can be approached through, he can be syncreticised with St. Anthony of Padua or St. Lazarus - who fits more closely the image portrayed by Papa Legba.
In the bible we are also told that St. Peter was imprisoned by King Herod. Whilst in prison Peter was freed by an angel, his shackles fell from him, and the prison doors swung open. The keys he is often shown holding in pictures of the Saint are taken as the symbol of his ability to lock and to unlock, to open or to block, all of your doors and all of your roads.
Traditional St. Peter folk Spell to ask for his help:
Set up a small altar to the Saint including his image and a glass of Water.
Anoint either a white, red or orange candle in honour of St. Peter, drawing the oil towards you if you wish to bring new opportunities towards you, or to have the door to opportunities opened, and rub the oil away from you if you are asking for a door to be closed.
Put a small bowl of earth collected from the crossroads, ensuring you have collected and paid for it properly (there are many methods, ranging from collecting the dirt then as you walk away throwing down 9 pennies as an offering to the crossroads spirits, ensuring you don't look back - to all kinds of ritual invocation at different times of the day). Make sure enough is in the bowl to be able to stand the candle in it. You might like to put the candle in a suitable small holder and surround it with the dirt in the bowl as a safer alternative to putting the candle straight into the dirt.
Burn a solar incense like Frankincense in an appropriate burner and pray to St. Peter and ask him for what you need.
Put an old key or key blank on top of the earth in the bowl - it is going to become a talisman for St. Peter. You may wish to pass the key through the incense smoke in multiples of three to bless and empower it.
Once the key is in the bowl safely let the candle burn down and when the rite is done, you may take the earth and any wax remains back to the cross roads - throwing it behind you as you pass through.
You now have a powerful prayer talisman to open your roads and to call upon St. Peter for help.
There are many appropriate prayers available on line to St. Peter to ask for his help, so we won't replicate them here. However, should you wish to compose your own prayer / petition this can be just as effective. If you wish to add such a petition to the saint, you can fold it up and put it beneath the bowl of earth.
